Our food and drink consumption habits seem to be a topic that is constantly hitting the headlines of late. So much so, it can be hard to keep up with what the latest guidelines are advising! But, when it comes to managing your diet to help look after your oral health, the advice is a lot clearer.

Here is a handy reminder of some of the key ways that you can easily keep your stunning smile in top condition:

1. A great way to help to protect your teeth and gums is to chew sugar-free gum after eating and drinking. The acids in our food and drink can lead to dental erosion, particularly fruit juices and fizzy drinks. By chewing sugar-free gum after meals, our saliva flow is increased which helps to neutralise these plaque acids.

2. Another tasty way to reduce the effects of plaque acids is to eat a cube of cheese after eating and drinking!

3. You should always wait for an hour before you brush your teeth after eating or drinking. So in the morning when you’re short on time, it’s better to brush your teeth before your breakfast, rather than straight after. Brushing straightaway could mean that you’re brushing away tiny particles of enamel which have been softened as you eat/drink.

4. Keep your gums healthy by eating a diet that is varied and rich in vitamins, minerals as well as fresh fruit and vegetables. This diet will help to prevent gum disease, meaning you’ll maintain a healthy smile.

5. We all love to have a snack in between meals but this can have a negative impact on our oral health. Try to avoid snacking as much as possible between meals and when it comes to the sweet stuff, limit sugary foods and drinks to mealtimes as this will help to reduce the amount of time your teeth are under attack from plaque acids.

6. For those of us with a sweet tooth, try choosing sugar-free sweets and drinks containing xylitol.

By sticking to these simple principles, you can enjoy a rich and varied diet without compromising the health of your teeth and gums!
